Canada’s latest Express Entry draw is a category based Express Entry draw.

This draw targeted candidates who can speak French. To be selected in this draw you needed to meet the normal requirements of the Express Entry program you applied under plus demonstrate proficiency in the French language by meeting these requirements.

This is the 10th French language category draw. By far the most common category based draw. There’s been 21,100 French language Invitations to Apply (ITA) issued since category draws started. For context, the next biggest, STEM (science, tech, engineering & math) has only issued 10,900 ITAs.

You can see further details on this in the tables below.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score cut-off for this draw is slightly below the average for French language draws of 418.

But it is still lower than general Express Entry draws – the average CRS cut-off for 2024 general draws is 536 for example.

As for the number Invitations to Apply (ITA) issued in this draw, it’s quite small. There average number of ITAs issued in French language draws is 2,110.

You can check out the full history of all the draws in the table and charts below.

Here is the full Express Entry draw history: all previous rounds of invitations since the first in 2015 with the CRS score and how many ITAs (Invitations to Apply) were issued.

With the EE draw history, keep in mind that each draw is different. For example a draw might only target one of the three immigration programs managed by Express Entry. So if you’re comparing prior CRS cut offs with your own score, make sure you’re looking at the draws that would cover your program.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the method through which Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) assess how many points your Express Entry Profile gets. The minimum latest CRS score needed to be picked from the pool changes from draw to draw.

What happens if multiple candidates have the cut-off CRS score?

If more than one candidate has the CRS cut-off score, then the person/people who submitted their Express Entry profile first gets the Invitation to Apply.

How many people are invited to apply in each Express Entry draw?

The average number of people invited to apply in each “all-programs” draw since 2017 is 3,582 (2017 is when numbers started to be consistently high).

But looking more recently, if we take all the “all-program” draws in 2020 to 2022 the average number of people invited to apply was 3,846. Keep in mind there were no “all-program” draws at all in 2021 due to the pandemic.

The range that IRCC seem to be targeting for “all-program” draws most recently (late 2022 and into 2023) seems to be around 5,000 ITAs issued however.

When will the next Express Entry draw be?

There is no definitive schedule for when Express Entry draws take place or the Express Entry next draw date.

IRCC only says that draws are held “about every 2 weeks”.

But, looking at previous rounds of invitations, draws are normally held two weeks apart on a Wednesday. Every Express Entry Draw in 2022 was on a Wednesday in fact.

If we’re trying to predict the Express Entry next draw date in 2024 it’s not quite as easy because things weren’t as structured in 2023 as you can see from the infographic above.

The first two draws of 2024 were two weeks apart on different days of the week, the third draw was the week after the second with the fourth the day after that.

But since then things seem to have settled into a two weekly rhythm. It’s not always the same day of the week that the draws happen but mostly they’ve been two weeks apart.

IRCC also seems like it’s doing an “all-programs” draw followed by one or two category based draws the following days.

    1. That’s a tough question to answer. I guess it’s not the best time to apply but if I were you I’d still get my application in the Express Entry pool. IRCC will start doing FSW program draws when they’re able and if you’re not in the pool then there’s zero chance of you getting an ITA. The downside might be your language test expiring before you get an ITA which would cost you money to retake.

  1. It seems like CEC draws have abruptly stopped. Is there a reason for this and is the next CEC draw more likely to be for next year since Canada has exceeded its immigration quota for this year?

    1. We’d need a crystal ball to know for certain what IRCC are doing. It does seem that IRCC is on track to meet its target of 401,000 newcomers in 2021 but the draws being done now don’t have a massive impact on the 2021 immigration numbers as those applicants drawn now won’t have their immigration finalised until next year. Maybe IRCC are going to revert to the pre-pandemic norm of not doing targeted CEC draws and relying on “all-program” draws for CEC candidates. We’ll just need to watch and see.

    1. Salut.
